Getting to Net Zero
Over the past century, there have been significant changes to how we in the West construct buildings and how we work and live in them. We are spending more time inside buildings than ever before, the built environment has become increasingly toxic, and airtight. The term Sick Building Syndrome is becoming more common and the number of people developing chemical sensitivities is increasing. More attention is being given to the importance of indoor air quality on human health and wellbeing.
Breathability, Humidity Control, and More
Natural wall finishes (when applied at a suitable thickness) are an important material for creating a healthy home environment. Natural plasters and renders are:
- Breathable – unlike conventional acrylic (plastic) and cement-based finishes which are film-forming and/or impermeable, natural wall finishes do not trap moisture. Either in the fabric of the building or within the living environment.
- Humidity Regulating – when applied at an adequate thickness, natural wall finishes absorb and desorb moisture in the air, helping to maintain an ideal relative humidity level for human health and guarding against module and fungi.
- Anti-bacterial – natural lime finishes have antibacterial properties and deter module.
- Non-toxic – truly natural wall finishes do not contain synthetic additives or chemicals.
Natural plasters and renders can also provide thermal regulation, are fire resistant and provide a connection with nature.
