5 Questions You Should Ask Applicators
Plaster, render, microcement, natural, acrylic….the world of wall finishes can be confusing. I remember that feeling well. One of the reasons I started Mineral Fox was to improve information transparency and to advocate for what clients want, especially when engaging applicators.
Here are some questions that you should be asking – to yourself and to applicators – as you research finishes for your project.
It’s important to ask yourself some questions reflect on what finish you want. For example, do you really want a venetian plaster? Or is that the name of a plaster you saw on Pinterest? How important is a healthy home to you? What’s your appetite for care and maintenance? What’s your budget? It’s important to reflect on these areas and get clear about the type of finish that is best for you (I’ll be posting more about different types of finishes next week).
When you meet with an applicator, here are some questions you should be asking:
- What’s their experience? If they’ve been referred by someone you trust, this isn’t as relevant (but it’s still a good exercise). If you’re not so familiar with them, ask what they specialise in – rendering, plastering (what kind – plasterboard setting or decorative) etc. Ask them what specific experience they have with the product you want them to use. For example, how many projects have you completed using microcement?
- Ask for referrals and make sure they are at least 6 months old. Then call the clients and ask for their honest feedback. You’re looking for positive reviews about not only their work, but their conduct.
- What product/brand are they proposing to use. Make sure you’re getting what you want. Ask them why they use that brand and how it aligns with the finish you want. Then educate yourself – product suppliers provide product information on their website. Learn about the product and it’s application system so you can be sure you’re getting what you want. If you want a material that’s natural, make sure that’s what you’re getting.
- Ask about sealers. Why do they recommend that particular sealer. Ask if it’s solvent, water-based, wax etc.
- Ask for samples or to see a project before work commences. Much of the finish comes down to the hand of the applicator. So it’s important you see their style and how they propose to finish the material before going ahead.
These are just some of the questions you should be asking. Don’t worry about asking too many questions. The best applicators are passionate about their craft and are happy when a client takes interest in their work. Take time to educate yourself to get the best outcome.
